Note

A bolt-type shackle is a secure rigging connector with a shackle body, a bolt, a nut, and a cotter pin, ideal for permanent or semi-permanent setups like tower rigging, where it remains fastened against twisting forces, unlike quicker screw-pin types, offering superior security for long-term installations by preventing accidental loosening. For Tower Down Guy Wire attachment, The Tower Manufacturers Recommend that these be Used for Permanent Erection and Take-down. Existing Tower Sites should be upgraded to and New Permanent Installations should be using the Bolt-Type with Cotter Pin Anchor Shackles.

Bolt-Type Shackle

Bolt-type shackles are heavy-duty connectors used for permanent or long-term rigging, like in crane operations, offshore lifting, and heavy transport, because their Nut-and-Cotter Pin closure provides superior security against loosening from vibration or sliding loads, unlike quicker screw-pin types. They are ideal for critical, long-duration lifts where safety is paramount, but require tools for installation/removal, making them less convenient for quick, temporary jobs.
A Bolt Type Shackle is a more secure version used in Tower Down Guys because with a Nut-and-Cotter Pin securing the shackle pin, they remain closed even when subject to Erection, Take-down, Vibration, Ice Buildup and Rotation.

Screw Pin Shackle

A screw pin shackle is a U-shaped rigging connector with a threaded pin that screws into one ear, providing a quick, temporary connection for lifting, towing, or securing loads, ideal for frequent assembly/disassembly but requiring the pin to be hand-tightened (or secured with a wrench) before each use due to vibration, often used in construction, marine, and agricultural tasks for its versatility and ease of use in non-permanent setups. They do not work well in Dynamic or Shifting load environments, nor are they suited for Permanent fixtures as the Screw may loosen over time due to Vibration and Twisting of loads and absent a Nut and/or Cotter Pin, the Screw can back out completely

Round Pin Shackle

Round pin shackles are used for simple, in-line connections in towing, tie-down, and general material handling, where loads are straight, not sideways (side-loading), and the pin can experience twisting/torque; they're quick to use with a cotter pin but not for overhead lifting or multi-leg rigging, where more secure bolt-type shackles are preferred for long-term/permanent use to prevent the pin from loosening. A Round pin shackle consists of a round unthreaded pin that easily slides through the ears of the shackle and is secured in place with a cotter pin. They work well in applications where the pin may be subjected to torque or twisting.
